From the lakeside follow the itinerary described in “Orange Route 1” to reach the village of Romanico. After the Oratory of San Giuseppe proceed along Via Romanico-Roncaro and then turn left onto the panoramic road Via Due Riviere as far as Via Mottarone-Loita. The asphalt road rises steeply uphill and is flanked by chestnuts woods, renovated peasants’ houses and a new housing development in a splendid position with views over the Borromean Gulf and Lake Maggiore. As you enter Loita, a welcoming little square with granite seats invites you to rest before visiting the hamlet with its Church of St. Fermo, the remains of an old factory and stone-built houses with wooden balconies that are medieval in origin. Return either along the same route or following the attractive mule-track through the woods leading to Roncaro where, after looking around, you can choose one of the two itineraries in “Orange Route 1”.
